Column Column Column
I have a new column at North by Northwestern up. It’s a nice change of pace — I’m actually criticizing the Obama administration for once. It’s about the marked lack of enthusiasm Congress and the Obama administration seems to have for the really groundbreaking campaign promises he made regarding gay rights.
Quick note for one person who I know disagrees with me over how much flak the administration should be catching from its liberal supporters — clearly, if my only complaint was “100 days and he hasn’t repealed DOMA yet!” that would be silly. But my larger point is that just saying that repealing DOMA, guaranteeing benefits for same-sex spouses of federal employees, passing and signing ENDA, scrapping DADT is just politically too difficult to do right now is highly worrying because these are hot button issues that will always arouse Republican opposition and will always be something of a pain to get through. The fact that Congress and the White House is so blatantly signalling that they don’t want to do anything seems to be indicative of a general cautiousness towards these issues that could lead to them never being pursued in a meaningful way.
