Matt Zeitlin: Impetuous Young Whippersnapper

Are these the Nazis, Walter?

I don’t have much to add to this otherwise informative Al Jazeera story on the new government in Lebanon, but this one Syrian political party has a rather striking name:

“I have asked Prime Minister Fouad Siniora to accept the nomination of Ali Kanso, [the former head of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party],” he said after referring to a figure previously opposed by al-Hariri’s camp.

I guess we can’t be that surprised that “social” and “national” would find themselves back together in a party name. It seems that despite the incredibly diversity of political parties, ideas and coalitions all over the world, the same few adjectives form all the titles. “Socialist” “National” “Republican” “Democratic” “Liberal”

Mix all those up, and you have most parties in the world, regardless of whatever ideology they espouse.
