Why The 50% Solution Isn’t A Solution

Short of a revote or a caucus, I see no fair way to seat any portion of Florida’s delegates. Moni Dinaeur has unearthed a proposal by the Florida democratic party to seat half the delegates now, and possibly seat all of them later. And while this looks like a fair compromise for two reasons – 1. It’s a solid punishment that doesn’t disenfranchise Florida’s voters and 2. That’s what the GOP did. But while it may be practical, I don’t see why exactly Florida’s delegates need to be counted. It was, after all, an essentially phony election in which neither candidate campaigned. The only reason this is an issue is because the Florida Democratic leadership is too petulant to accept their universally agreed upon punishment and because the Clinton campaign is using Florida as a crutch to show that the race is closer than it actually is. Both of these objections have no basis in the rules, procedural fairness or any principles besides parochialism and trying to achieve a sleazy primary victory.
