Matt Zeitlin: Impetuous Young Whippersnapper

Pardon?

Mike Huckabee appears to think that pardoning a serial rapist wasn’t enough and, if president, would move on to Border Patrol agents who shoot unarmed suspects and then lie about it to their superiors.  Huckabee, trying to toughen himself in the eyes of the GOP base after years of thinking that illegal immigrants are people too, has now hinted at pardoning Border Patrol agents Compean and Ramos.  Compean and Ramos, who were convicted of obstruction of justice after shooting an unarmed, fleeing drug dealer and then attempting to cover it up, have become a cause celebre among the nativist right.

There can be no explanation for this widespread pardon-fervor besides a feeling that deep down, it’s OK to shoot unarmed Mexicans and then lie about it like it was no big deal.  Compean and Ramos were convicted by a jury selected by their own defense lawyers in a red state.  Surely the jurors and judge had no sympathy for the Mexican drug smuggler Compean and Ramos shot, instead they convicted the agents because, surprisingly enough, covering up shootings of unarmed people is a bad thing to do.  To see Huckabee endorse this type of nativist lawlessness is disturbing.  What’s worse is that Huck probably doesn’t know a whole lot about the case and instead is just trying to prove that he can hate Mexicans with the best of them.

Surprisingly enough, Andy McCarthy has the best article explaining that Compean and Ramos are guilty scumbags.
