I was talking about the virtues of receiving a real letter with some people, and despite my earlier pessimism about setting up camp outside your mailbox while all your friends are getting their college news, the prospect of opening a real letter seemed to have a concreteness that an online notification lacked. And then I realized this was all assuming that after racing down to the mailbox, frantically flipping through the mail and tearing open the letter you would receive good news. As far as rejection deferral goes, I imagine the online notification is much superior.
