The Tancredo Mystery

One of the mysteries of this campaign has been the floundering of Tom Tancredo. While it may be true that the Colorado Congressman is objectively nuts – he did propose to nuke Mecca and Medina in response to a terrorist attack, that doesn’t seem like something that would necessarily disqualify a GOP candidate from making more of an impression. It’s largely because all the other candidates have been trying to, as he put it, “out-Tancredo Tancredo” Even the supposedly compassionate Huckabee’s immigration plan is taken nearly verbatim from a Mark Krikorian article, while John McCain has largely abandoned the comprehensive approach of McCain-Kennedy and is now on the enforcement first bandwagon. Hell, even Ron Paul, is a restrictionist on immigration and is probably along with Huckabee is  sucking up a lot of the right wing populist energy that Tancredo thought was rightly his.
