Losing the Youth

Apparently, there was a Democratic debate this morning.  I woke up, oh, 5 hours (3 on the West Coast) after it started, thus dooming any prospect of watching it.  Of course, these debates are boring and uninformative anyway, so I’m not all that upset about missing it.

There’s a larger question – who on earth watches a primary debate at nine in the morning on a Sunday in August?  Certainly no one under the age of, say, 35.  Yes, I know that older people vote more often so neither party is losing out by having a debate at such offensive to young people hours, but when Democrats are making signifigant gains among youth, maybe they shouldn’t be debating at such an antiquated time.  On the other hand, those Rock the Vote forums are unspeakably lame and embarrassing, so they should probably just cut down on all the debates for a while.

  1. I’m under 35, and I watched it (though I didn’t wake up until 9:15ish – thank you TiVo). Regardless, these things are pretty influential not because people watch them when they’re on, but because they watch clips of them on news broadcasts and The Daily Show and such.

Also, tired of debates? You’re not the only one.

  3. Zeitlin the Younger,

Clearly you have never been a science major in college. 4 years of 8 AM or 9 AM math and science classes, 5 days a week, will give you the magical inability to sleep past 8:30 AM for the rest of your life. I’m 29, and broken for life thanks to college.
