Matt Zeitlin: Impetuous Young Whippersnapper

There’s Crazy and Then There’s Tom Tancredo

Tom Tancredo doesn’t just have ill will towards immigrants, but also towards intelligence.  So, sure, Bush’s War on Terror strategy hasn’t been that big of a success (invade wrong country etc) but at least he’s never proposed to do something as batshit crazy as Tancredo’s genius counter terrorism strategy.

If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina. Because that is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do. But as I say, if I am wrong, fine. … I would be happy to do something else. But you had better find a deterrent or you will find an attack. There is no other way around it. There have got to be negative consequences for the actions they take. That’s the most negative I can think of.

The fact that Tancredo thinks his strategy to get out of the 1 percent range in the primary polls is to propose the most boneheaded counter terrorism strategy this side of a Free Republic thread just shows how crazy certain parts of the GOP base really are.  The State Department, to their credit, said his ideas were“reprehensible” and “absolutely crazy.”
