Mark Steyn Comes Out in Favor of a Carbon Tax…Oh Wait, Nevermind

with one comment

Over at the Corner, Bearded Musical Theatre Wonderman Mark Steyn points out some problems with carbon offsets and carbon trading as a means to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases:

You’d have to have a heart as cold as the pre-globally-warmed Arctic not to be howling with laughter at this, from The Guardian:

One senior figure suggested there may be faults with up to 20% of the carbon credits – known as certified emissions reductions – already sold. Since these are used by European governments and corporations to justify increases in emissions, the effect is that in some cases malpractice at the CDM has added to the net amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Katrina was triggered by Al Gore’s carbon offsets.

Sorry to get everyone’s hopes up, but instead of explaining how Public Choice and the difficulty of enforcement make an EU-style carbon trading ineffective in comparison to a Pigovian carbon tax, Steyn offers up nothing but snark and scorn for any efforts to avert a global climate catastrophe. I mean, why talk about climate change when you can make fun of Al Gore?  Steyn and the editors of the National Review could just shoot a walrus in the face, at least they’d be more honest about it.  But, then again, what do you expect from a magazine that has the Planet Gore blog?

PS – Mark Levin too hates Walruses and Bangladesh

Today you even embrace the religion of global warming, a stunning shift from prior policy (your administration even went to the Supreme Court and argued correctly that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant).

How could we forget, in the words of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the virtues of carbon dioxide, “they call it a pollutant, we call it life”

What’s next, global warming “sceptics” referring to the dealkylation of the ocean due to increased concentration of carbon in the atmosphere as “neutralization” thus intentionally misleading their science ignorant audience into thinking it’s a good thing?
